Postpartum Guide

Make the transition into parenthood as stress-free as possible!

Colorado Natural Childbirth’s Postpartum Guide draws on traditional postpartum practices around the world, and gives you plenty of ideas, allowing you to customize it to fit your own needs.  You do not have to have (or plan to have) a natural birth to use this guide.  The plan you create will be specific to you, your parenting style, family structure, and community.  This 15-page guide provides information for:

  • Creating a plan for taking time off from work, chores, and social obligations.
  • Making your postpartum time restful and creating a base of support to help you feel connected to your community.
  • Your partner’s role during the postpartum period.
  • How family and friends can help support you.
  • Professional support and services available.
  • A game plan for handling visitors.
  • Help with meals, household chores, and preparing the home.
  • Healing and recovering from birth.
  • Money & legal matters.

This guide is both gentle and informative, empowering you to pick and choose what is right for you and your family.  In many cultures around the world, the mother is taken care of for the first 30-40 days after her baby is born, allowing her to care for her new baby. She’s not expected to entertain guests or do household chores, such as cooking or running errands. Many mothers in the US are trying to reclaim this sacred postpartum time by having a “lying-in” period, or a “milk retreat,” to recover from birth, get breastfeeding off to a great start, and to bond with her baby.

Knowing that you want to take time to rest after your baby is born is one thing, but you really need to make a plan for this time in order to make the most of it, especially if you have only a short time off before returning to work or school.  When making your birth plan, consider making a postpartum plan too.  I’ve never heard a new mother say she had too much postpartum support, but I have heard several wish that they had done more to prepare for after the baby was born.
